Mouledoux, Bland, Legrand & Brackett has adopted the Louisiana Bar Foundation’s Kids’ Chance Scholarship Program as one of the firm’s philanthropic charities. The program provides scholarships to the children of Louisiana workers who have been killed or permanently and totally disabled in an accident compensable under a state or federal Workers’ Compensation Act or law.
November 13-17, 2023 is Kids’ Chance Awareness Week, and we’d like to encourage you to support this important program.
Losing a parent is not only emotionally devastating, it can be financially devastating. Many kids have to start working during high school to help with household expenses. Going to college is often not an option, and if it is, it’s a financial challenge.
The impact of receiving a Kids’ Chance scholarship can be life-changing, as recipient Molly Cvitanovic recounts below.
How Does Kids’ Chance Impact Lives? Ask Molly.
I was living the life of an active 16-year-old when my father was instantly killed in a construction accident. My world changed immediately.
My mother was a public school teacher in Mandeville, so our family relied on both my mom’s and dad’s salaries. My little brother was only 14, so I started working during high school to help support us.
When I was a senior trying to figure out how to pay for college, my high school counselor told me about the Kids’ Chance Scholarship Program, so I applied for it. I was very excited when I heard I was chosen. It was one of the most significant scholarships that I received.
I graduated from Louisiana State University in 2009 with a degree in accounting. A year later I got my Master’s Degree in accounting. I took the CPA exam while I was getting my Master’s so I started my career as a CPA working for EY, a Big Four accounting firm, after completing two internships with the firm during college. I have worked for Entergy since 2014 and during that time I have gained diverse experience through various roles in regulatory, project management, and finance.
I’ve had a really great career, and I owe a lot of that to Kids’ Chance.
I am extremely grateful the Kids’ Chance Scholarship Program continues to help kids who are in the same situation as I was. Workers’ compensation benefits do not equal somebody’s salary and wages. Families like mine really struggle after they lose a parent. Kids lose their childhoods because they have to start supporting their families while dealing with tragedy. The scholarship allows them to go to college. It helps financially support them throughout their education and be a little more carefree.
