American Transportation Research Institute Releases 2019 Top 100 Truck Bottlenecks

Each year, the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) conducts an in-depth analysis of 300 freight-significant highway locations using truck position and speed data derived from wireless onboard communications systems used by the trucking industry, including GPS data from nearly 1,000,000 trucks. The analytics result in a study which breaks down the most congested portions of America’s roadways. Earlier this year, the ATRI released its 2019 list, which showed the Top 10 choke-points as:

  1. Fort Lee, New Jersey: I-95 at SR 4
  2. Atlanta, Georgia: I-285 at I-85 (North)
  3. Atlanta, Georgia: I-75 at 285 (North)
  4. Los Angeles, California: SR 60 at SR 57
  5. Houston, Texas: I-45 at I-69/US 59
  6. Cincinnati, Ohio: I-71 at I-75
  7. Chicago, Illinois: I-290 at I-90/I-94
  8. Nashville, Tennessee: I-24/I-40 at I-440 (East)
  9. Atlanta, Georgia: I-20 at I-285 (West)
  10. Los Angeles, California: I-710 at I-105

Notably, two of the top ten are located in Atlanta, with another two in Los Angeles. No location in the New Orleans Metropolitan Area made the Top 100, and the only location in Louisiana to make the list was Baton Rouge, Louisiana at I-10 at I-110, which checked in at number 19.
